The most common mistake in retargeting is repetition. Showing the exact same product image to a user 15 times over 30 days doesn't build desire; it builds irritation and banner blindness.

Sequential Retargeting

Effective retargeting moves the user through a psychological sequence based on the time since they last engaged:

  • Days 1-3 (The Reminder): Dynamic product ads. Show them exactly what they looked at.
  • Days 4-7 (Social Proof): Shift the creative. Show them user-generated content (UGC) or powerful testimonials about the product.
  • Days 8-14 (The Objection Handler): Address why they haven't bought yet. Run ads highlighting your easy return policy, warranty, or customer service.
  • Days 15-30 (The Incentive): Now, and only now, offer a discount code or free shipping to push them over the edge.

This staggered approach protects your brand equity and significantly improves bottom-of-funnel ROI.
